Neighbor shares perspective after suspect shot by Spokane County deputy during domestic violence call

Deputies Spokane Valley police got a call about a possible domestic violence incident at a home.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Jim Earlscourt was watching the Gonzaga basketball game last night. That was when he began to hear sirens.

"Heard the shots proximately about 6:30," Earlscourt said.

Earlscourt lives two homes down from where a Spokane County deputy shot a domestic violence suspect. He wasn't quite sure what was going on.

"You normally don't hear gunshots up here," Earlscourt said.

Deputies say Spokane Valley police got a call about a possible domestic violence incident at a home Tuesday night. The caller said a man broke a door inside the house and would not leave a female alone.

"After the first police officer arrived, it got pretty hectic around here," Earlscourt said. "There's a lot of police presence."

As they responded to the call, deputies say they were told the man had a gun and had an active domestic violence warrant for his arrest. When deputies arrived at the home, shots were fired and a man was hit.

Earlscourt said, "There were several shots, three to four shots, for sure."

Deputies say they saw what appeared to be a firearm in the area where the man was shot but did not give any other details. Earlscourt says he was impressed with the police's response.

"I wasn't scared for my safety because I, you know, I mean, I didn't hear any more shots after the first," Earlscourt said.

Deputies say the suspect was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. There is no update on the suspect's condition. No other people or officers were injured.

Because this is a deputy shooting, Washington State Patrol is leading the investigation for the shooting. They had no further comment at this time.
