Newport residents cleared to return home after a nearby structure fire

Due to strong winds, officials were urging residents south of the railroad track to prepare to evacuate.

NEWPORT, Wash. — Residents in Newport are now clear to returning their homes if they evacuated due to a nearby structure fire.

The Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office is still urging residents to keep their distance from the fire and any fire units in the area. 

The sheriff's office first reported a structure fire in the 700 block of South Washington Avenue around 2:15 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Due to strong winds, officials were urging residents south of the railroad track to prepare to evacuate.
