SPOKANE, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) confirmed that the “Children of the Sun” trail will temporarily reopen on Friday, July 12.
The bridge crossing at North Market Street and East Garland Avenue will open for pedestrians to enjoy biking and walking along the trail.
The Garland Bridge was closed in May of 2024, reopened for a community celebration event on June 21, and closed again for construction.
WSDOT reports that contractor crews have been installing permanent barriers on the bridge but due to a fabrication error that must be fixed off-site, contractor crews will leave the construction site and reopen the bridge.
WSDOT estimates that it will take between six and eight weeks before the installation of the barrier can continue.
Once crews can return to the site, the bridge will close again for roughly two weeks in order to finish the work.
The trail runs parallel to the North Spokane Corridor and, according to WSDOT, will eventually connect with the Centennial Trail. It is also planned to connect with the Ben Burr Trails in the future.
