CHENEY, Wash. — Cooler days are ahead for the Cheney community.
On Monday, KREM 2 got an updated look at what the city's new aquatic center will look like and how soon it will open.
Construction of Cheney's new aquatic center recently started at Hagelin Park. Crews are digging out dirt to make room for a new way for the community to cool off.
The aquatic center will feature a lazy river, water slide and traditional pool with 25-yard lanes.
Cheney voters approved the $14 million project last year. Now, they're getting closer to seeing it come to fruition. The previous pool closed about three years ago due to a major mechanical failure. Cheney has been without a local outdoor pool ever since.
The city is expecting to open the center by summer 2025.
"I believe this is the only outdoor pool in the West Plains is growing rapidly," Dan Curley, City of Cheney Capital Projects Manager, said. "So we're really excited to be able to have that amenity here in Cheney."
Curley said the city is also working with sponsors and the Spokane Parks Foundation to generate more funds to help keep pool fees affordable and accessible.
Plans for this park don't end when the aquatic center is complete. The city said it's working on long-term plans to renovate the park to add more walking trails and new pickleball courts.
