Kootenai Co. Coroner releases report for Spirit Lake woman killed in police shooting

KCSO hasn't officially said whether a Spirit Lake police officer shot and killed S.A. Floyd, but the coroner's report lists her manner of death as a homicide.

SPIRIT LAKE, Idaho — The Kootenai County Coroner released a report regarding the shooting death of an elderly Spirit Lake woman, determining her death was a homicide.

S.A. Floyd, 67, was found dead in her Spirit Lake apartment last November after police fired a weapon. Since Floyd's death, law enforcement has remained tight-lipped about what led up to and followed the shooting, but the coroner's report sheds some light on what happened the night of the incident.

According to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office (KCSO), Floyd's family called police at 6:14 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2023. The coroner's report states Floyd was "found" by law enforcement at the same time, but doesn't provide anymore details.

KCSO said Spirit Lake police officers arrived at Floyd's apartment at 6:27 p.m. Police initially said they were responding to an apparent mental health crisis, but later did not specify what the caller reported or what they were responding to.

According to the KCSO, a shooting occurred at 6:31 p.m. The coroner's report lists Floyd's time of death as 6:35 p.m.

The sheriff's office has not officially stated whether Floyd was shot and killed by a Spirit Lake police officer; however, the coroner's report lists her death classification as trauma and the manner of death as a homicide.

KCSO was tasked with investigating the police shooting, as is standard protocol when a law enforcement officer fires a weapon at someone. The sheriff's office concluded its investigation in December and sent its recommendations to the Kootenai County Prosecutor, who will decide whether or not charges will be filed against the officer.

KREM 2 reached out to KCSO for confirmation on whether Floyd was shot and killed by a police officer. At the time of publication, no response has been received.
