SPIRIT LAKE, Idaho — People in Spirit Lake were hoping to learn more about last week's shooting and the death of an elderly woman. But, they left Thursday night's press conference with even more questions.
Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris made it very clear his deputies were not involved in the incident, which is why his office is now investigating. The sheriff would not answer any basic questions or even confirm if the woman was shot and killed by police.
"The purpose of this press conference is to provide as much information to you as possible and to clarify a lot of information that is circulating in the public phone calls that we received and other platforms that have raised these questions," Norris said.
But, Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris and his team offered no information to clear up any speculation.
It was standing room only inside Spirit Lake City Hall, not far from where the shooting took place.
"SA Floyd is a 67 year old female," Norris said. "Ms. Floyd lived alone inside her residence. The location is a multi-complex retirement facility."
The sheriff says the 67-year-old's next of kin called police at 6:14 p.m. on November 1, two Spirit Lake police officers arrived 13 minutes later. A shooting occurred four minutes after that.
The 67-year-old was later found dead inside her apartment. However, the sheriff's office will not say if she was shot by police or why officers were called in the first place.
"At this time it's just a call for service and that's all we're going to release at this time," a Kootenai County deputy told attendees.
Authorities also wouldn't say if or why the Spirit Lake officers felt threatened.
"You guys are asking specific details about the incident and the sheriff and the prosecutor and the mayor," the deputy said. "We've all been very clear we cannot release specific details about the incident at this time."
"I've never seen a press release this tight-lipped," Resident Debbie Novak said. "It just was a total waste of time for everybody to come out."
Novak also couldn't get answers tonight. Her son was shot and killed by Spokane Police in 2019.
"Really hoping that somebody from this woman's family would be here because I thought there would be a few things that would be helpful for them to know, and I just wanted to show support and I wanted to know what happened," Novak said.
