Man allegedly responsible for murder/attempted suicide that killed sister not expected to survive

According to a search warrant, the brother was found in a car five blocks from his sister's body with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. — A new search warrant is revealing more details in the murder/attempted suicide in Medical Lake that left a young girl dead and her brother in critical condition.

According to documents, the brother allegedly responsible for the crime is not expected to survive from his apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The murder occurred on November 26. Deputies with the Spokane County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) found 11-year-old Liela "Lilly" Stolworthy's body in the middle of the road on North Prentis Street in Medical Lake. Approximately five blocks away, a man, later identified as Stolworthy's older brother, was found in his car with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Both were taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where Stolworthy was later pronounced dead. Surveillance video of the shooting revealed her brother shot her as she was exiting his car, according to the search warrant.

Deputies contacted the girl's parents and other family members. They said Stolworthy was the youngest of four adopted daughters and had reportedly been "acting out." Prior to the crime, she ran away from home, prompting her father to gather her belongings and give them to her brother to hold onto until she returned.

Stolworthy eventually returned home, and her father called her brother to drive over to the house on North Prentis Street and give her belongings back. When the brother arrived, he told his sister to retrieve her things from his car. After some time, the father noticed Stolworthy didn't come back inside. That was before he went outside to find her lying in the middle of the road.

After Stolworthy was transported to the hospital, her brother reportedly sent a text to the family group chat that read, "I'm sorry. Please forgive me."

At this time, detectives want to search the brother's car to seize the following items from the brother's car:

  • Firearms
  • Ammunition
  • Cell phones
  • Documents (Bills, letters, invoices, etc.)
  • Fingerprints
  • DNA samples

Stolworthy was revealed to be a former student within the Medical Lake School District. Right now, the school district's Wellness Center team, school counselors and external agencies are working to provide crisis counseling to those who need it.

A candlelight vigil for Stolworthy is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. at Wilcox Park in Medical Lake.
