Girl killed, man in critical condition in possible murder-attempted suicide

Deputies say the possible murder-attempted suicide involved a girl and her adult brother, and appeared to be the result of a domestic violence incident.

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. — A juvenile girl was allegedly killed by her brother over the weekend in what detectives believe was a murder-attempted suicide.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office (SCSO), a girl was found in the middle of a road in Medical Lake with serious injuries, which she later died from. Nearby, a man was found in a car with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but he was taken to the hospital, treated and remains in critical condition. Deputies believe this was a domestic violence incident.

Late Sunday afternoon, SCSO deputies responded to reports of a girl in the middle of the road on North Prentis Street in Medical Lake. The caller said the girl was seriously injured but was unsure how she was injured.

The girl was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she later died, according to SCSO. It is not clear if the girl was shot or injured in another manner.

Shortly after the initial call, another 911 call was made about a Mustang parked on North Graham Road in Medical Lake. The caller said the driver's side window looked like someone had shot it, and it appeared someone was in the car.

Deputies arrived and found a man in the driver's seat, slumped over and holding what looked like a pistol in his hand. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Initial information from witnesses indicates the girl was contacted outside a home by her older brother. Witnesses said the sound of a gunshot or vehicle backfire was heard just before the man's car, a Mustang, was seen quickly leaving the area.

Deputies believe this incident is a murder-attempted suicide and don't believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

The identities of the girl and man will be released at a later time. KREM 2 spoke with her family, who did not want her name released.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Check at 509-46-2233, reference #10177218.

The Medical Lake School District's Wellness Center team, school counselors and external agencies are working to provide crisis counseling to those who need it.
