KELLOGG, Idaho — An Idaho judge has sentenced a Kellogg man, Majorjon Kaylor, who shot and killed a family of four last June, to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
What started as a dispute between neighbors ended in a quadruple murder of four members of the same family. Less than a week before the shootings. Kaylor claims one of the victims, 18-year-old Devin Smith, exposed himself in front of Kaylor's children. Kaylor says he told Devin's mother and grandfather, but they didn't take him seriously.
On June 18th, Father's Day, Kaylor came home from work and grabbed his gun before getting into a heated argument with his two adult neighbors. During the argument, Kaylor told officers he snapped and pulled out his gun, shooting and killing 41-year-old Kenna Guardipee and her father Kenneth. Kaylor then broke into the ground floor of the duplex, killing Devin and his 16-year-old brother Aiken.
Court documents show that just minutes after the killings, Kaylor surrendered himself to a Shoshone County sheriff's deputy who was responding to a report of gunshots. Kaylor immediately told the deputy that he had just shot and killed his neighbors.
The murders rocked the small community of Kellogg, which only has a population of about 2,000. A memorial was soon put up for the victims.
Prosecutors charged Kaylor with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary for breaking into the home to kill the two sons. Kaylor initially pleaded not guilty to all the charges, but eventually, he and prosecutors worked out a plea deal on lesser charges.
In court on Monday, nine victim impact statements were heard. Several of the victims' family members asked the judge to sentence Kaylor to life in prison for each murder charge.
Kaylor did not make a statement in court during his sentencing.
His defense asked the court to consider Kaylor's background, arguing that his childhood was full of abuse, poverty and instability. Kaylor's defense also questioned why the courts didn't give their client's family any options, like restraining orders after the initial inappropriate behavior.
