CHATTAROY, Wash. — For the past month, we've been journeying to small towns in our region, sharing their incredible stories. Chattaroy, Washington, a city close to our hearts, takes center stage as our final destination. Just two months ago, the Oregon Road Fire tore through this community, leaving hundreds of family homes in ruins.
Riverside High School, serving as the evacuation center, provided refuge for those affected in the days and weeks following the disaster.
The Salvation Army's Support
Amid the devastation, an army of volunteers rallied to assist those affected. However, as time passes, the need for ongoing support becomes evident, and this is where the Salvation Army plays a pivotal role.
Captain David Kane, Corps Officer and leader of the Salvation Army in Spokane and the surrounding areas, stands next to one of their emergency disaster vehicles. This vehicle arrived swiftly when the crisis unfolded in Chattaroy and is equipped with water and basic necessities for both fire-affected residents and emergency workers.
The Salvation Army has employed four case managers to guide families and individuals through long-term recovery. These dedicated professionals provide support, identify resources, and advocate for those facing roadblocks as they rebuild their lives.
Captain Kane emphasized, "Every year, the Salvation Army adopts families in need, and this year, the number of families in need has grown due to the fire survivors. We need families willing to sponsor these survivors, ensuring they have a happy Christmas this holiday season. Financial gifts are always a valuable way to support, as each family has unique needs."
The Journey Ahead
Captain Kane also acknowledged that the recovery process would be lengthy, and the Salvation Army is committed to standing alongside the community every step of the way. Their unwavering dedication to supporting Chattaroy reflects the organization's core values of service and assistance.
How You Can Help
If you're willing and able to contribute to Chattaroy's recovery, you can donate online to the Salvation Army. The donations directly help Washingtonians impacted by wildfires.
As we conclude our Hometown Highlight series for the year, Chattaroy serves as an inspiring reminder that when disaster strikes, communities unite, ensuring that no one has to face their journey to recovery alone.
