Hometown Highlight | Determination drives revitalization efforts in LaCrosse, Wash.

Discover how LaCrosse, Washington's resilient community, led by LaCrosse Community Pride, is revitalizing their town and preserving its history.

LACROSSE, Wash. — In the heart of LaCrosse, Washington, a sense of quiet determination runs deep among its residents. Despite the challenges, the community remains resilient and refuses to surrender to adversity. Their collective goal? To breathe new life into their town.

The driving force behind this revitalization is LaCrosse Community Pride, a dedicated group of volunteers whose mission is to rejuvenate the town and restore its former glory.

LaCrosse Community Pride embarked on this mission over a decade ago, and the non-profit organization has since worked tirelessly to restore historic buildings and implement crucial improvements along Main Street. Their efforts have brought essential services closer to the town's 300 residents, fostering connection and community.

One resident, Sarah Kane, has taken up the mantle of executive director of LaCrosse Community Pride. While it's not her official job title, her duties align perfectly with the mission of making things work for LaCrosse.

The town, situated 35 miles away from major centers, faced unique challenges. However, in January of this year, LaCrosse joined the Washington Main Street program, which offers tax incentives to businesses that contribute to the survival and prosperity of historic downtowns. The goal is to preserve the town's history while forging ahead toward a promising future.

One iconic establishment on Main Street is Startin Repair, a family-run business that has been a staple since the 1960s. The Startin family embodies the small-town values and lifestyle that make LaCrosse special. They are part of the town's tapestry, fostering a sense of safety and community in this close-knit environment.

Lois Startin, a member of the Startin family, expressed the allure of small-town life, emphasizing the friendly atmosphere and the absence of big-city crime. She highlighted the safety and security felt by residents, a sentiment echoed by many in LaCrosse.

Despite the persistent population decline, LaCrosse Community Pride refuses to succumb to the fate of a ghost town. The organization draws inspiration from the town's past, investing in restoring historic buildings that once faced extinction. One such transformation turned a dilapidated structure into a thriving Airbnb, attracting visitors and bolstering local businesses.

Though LaCrosse's population has not seen growth, the innovative ideas and unwavering determination of LaCrosse Community Pride have ensured the town remains on the map. Their collective efforts have kept Lacrosse alive, a testament to the power of community spirit and perseverance in facing challenges.
