KELLOGG, Idaho — Change has swept through the Silver Valley, bringing vibrant colors to a place known for its underground treasures. In Kellogg, Idaho, where natural beauty abounds, the people truly make the difference.
Tina Karst, a 24-year educator, shares her profound appreciation for Kellogg's charm but emphasizes that the community's unwavering spirit has captured her heart.
"This is a source of pride. Just knowing when you get off the freeway, people care in Kellogg because we care," says Karst, highlighting the tight-knit bond among residents.
Karst, a passionate advocate for change, took KREM 2 on a journey through her volunteer work during the past two summers. Her mission? To transform the outward appearance of local school buildings and, in turn, change what's happening inside the minds of the children.
Over two summers, Karst dedicated her vacation time to volunteering, painting buildings and hallways that house everything from the local pre-school to Kellogg High School, home of the Wildcats.
Students have noticed the transformation. "Our hallways seem more happy and brighter with all the painting we did," remarks one student, echoing the sentiments of many who now find the school environment more exciting and welcoming.
Painting a brighter future in Kellogg
Beyond covering old scars, the fresh paint on the walls sparked new ideas. Kellogg High School recently joined a statewide program aimed at promoting a positive learning environment, setting clear expectations for students, and fostering a sense of pride and community.
This summer, Karst collaborated with a local church that provided volunteers from around the country to assist with painting, cleaning, and, most importantly, caring for their community.
As for what's next for Karst, one can only wonder, as she's constantly on the move. Her mission, however, is clear: "It all starts with a dream and a plan—the whole plan is about bringing love back to the community and reminding people of the love and kindness that is already here."
In Kellogg, the transformation was initiated by one extraordinary woman who understood that doing nothing was never an option. The town has experienced a world of change, all thanks to the power of community and a shared vision of revitalization.
