Snow, ice and wind cancel, delay schools in eastern Washington and Idaho

School districts changed schedules after a winter storm dropped snow and brought strong winds to the Spokane area on Wednesday, December 18.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A strong winter storm brought snow, ice, and wind to Spokane and the Inland Northwest, leading several school districts to cancel or delay the start of school.

Districts in the immediate Spokane area are not impacted by the closures and delays, as precipitation there has fallen as rain.

  • Valley School District - 2-hour delay

Weather Forecast

Following a soggy Tuesday afternoon and evening, more rain and strong wind are in the forecast. Wind Advisories are in place for much of central Washington, the Palouse, and Spokane area Wednesday morning.

The advisories run from 4am to 1pm, gusts will approach 50 miles per hour in that time. But before the wind hits, there comes even more rain.

The second wave of rain from the atmospheric river hits early Wednesday morning, between 12am and 8am. This batch is all-rain, even for northern Washington as temperatures are likely going to be in the 40s, even during the morning hours as temperatures keep climbing.
