Silver Mountain closed Friday due to 'unusually high winds'

Silver Mountain closed its gondola on Friday morning before shutting down the entire ski area.

KELLOGG, Idaho — Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, Idaho, is closed to skiers and snowboarders on Friday due to unusually high winds.

Silver Mountain posted on Facebook shortly after 8 a.m. on Friday that the gondola for skiers and snowboarders was on hold. About 20 minutes later, they said the ski resort would be closed due to "unusually high winds"

An avalanche that swept down the resort's 16-to-1 run near Wardner Peak killed three people and injured four on Jan. 7. It took crews three days to recover all people from the area.

The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Watch for the Spokane area on Saturday. Winds could gust up to 60 mph in some cases.

Strong winds mean isolated power outages and tree damage are possible.

Wind gusts could reach 35 mph by Friday afternoon in Spokane and are expected to increase to 40-60 mph by Saturday morning.

On Saturday evening, gusts are expected to reach 30-50 mph in Spokane.
