SPOKANE, Wash. — Freezing rain is a good possibility Friday, following yet another round of snow here in the Inland Northwest. Thankfully it doesn't look to be as widespread or heavy as what Portland saw earlier in the week. Most locations will pick up much less than a tenth of an inch of ice by the time it comes to an end.
To put that in perspective, anything under a tenth of an inch wouldn't be enough to down trees or knock out power. Instead, the biggest threat would be icy spots on roads and sidewalks.
Timing is interesting with this potential freezing rain. Snow falls all night Thursday and comes to an end just in time for the morning commute on Friday. 1-2 inches is it for the snow. But as the snow winds down, the persistent southerly flow will warm the mid layers of the atmosphere enough that the light scattered showers in the afternoon bring the potential for the freezing rain.
It looks like most locations will pick up between 0.01" and 0.1" of ice Friday. That isn't enough to bring down trees, tree branches, or even power lines, but it is enough to create a few slick spots on the roads. Especially following our recent snow.
The greatest potential for freezing rain will be along the Washington/Oregon border. But, as far north as Interstate 90 from Moses Lake through Spokane into the Silver Valley, we could see a few light showers and ice formation. The title image of this article shows where we will see the greatest potential.
