School closures & delays: Snow cancels, delays schools in eastern Washington, north Idaho

Several schools across the Inland Northwest are delaying the start or cancelling school after a winter storm brought wind, snow and rain to the region.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Following a storm that brought snow, wind and rain to parts of eastern Washington and north Idaho,  many school districts are choosing to delay or cancel classes on Tuesday, January 9.

Several advisories and warnings are in place including a Winter Weather Advisory, Winter Storm Warning and High Wind Advisory are in place for much of the region.

Weather Forecast

By Tuesday morning Eastern Washington will see snow change to rain as temps increase, the snow remains heavy for North Idaho and the mountains of northeast Washington.

Snow Totals: Spokane will get 2-3" of snow - most falling before midnight. Coeur d'Alene could pick up a lot more with more snow than rain falling early Tuesday, totals will be closer to 4-8" there. Sandpoint and Wallace is 8-12" with temperatures staying a little cooler. The longer the snow continues into Tuesday, the higher the totals will be. 

Winds: Wind Advisories are in place for all of central and eastern Washington in anticipation of potentially damaging winds. Gusts will approach 40-50mph Tuesday morning. The foothills of the Blue Mountains are under High Wind Warnings, gusts there will be up to 60mph. The wind out of the southwest will bump temperatures up above freezing across much of the region, causing the switch from snow to rain for some.
