Record-breaking temperatures for the last day of winter & first day of spring in Inland Northwest

High temps will hit the low 70s for some in the Inland Northwest, setting record-high temperatures.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spring starts Tuesday, but we have already gotten a head start on the spring temperatures!

At 70 degrees on St. Patrick's Day, Spokane tied the record high for that day. We still have another two days of at or near record warmth to go.

Monday's forecast is once again at 70 degrees, this time that would break the record of 68 degrees set in 1947. Other records for March 18 are 67 degrees in Pullman, 70 degrees in Coeur d'Alene and 72 degrees in Omak. Just about everyone should be near those values on Monday.

Tuesday's forecast is also at 69 degrees for Spokane, again above the daily record high, which is 68 degrees(year: 1947).

The record warmth and the string of days in the upper 60s and low 70s is a result of a blocking pattern which is starting to resembling that of a "heat dome". A massive area of high pressure directly over the Northwest has the weather plenty warm throughout the western half of the U.S. as a ridge in the jet stream arcs far over western Canada. However, this pattern isn't going to last all week. It'll start to break down on Wednesday, with a windier day in store first, and then rainy and colder weather will arrive by Friday and Saturday.
