SPOKANE, Wash. — As extreme cold temperatures settle in this weekend, it is important to be as prepared as possible.
When it comes to car batteries and cold weather, it’s almost like a Superman and kryptonite situation with cold weather being the kryptonite.
As temperatures drop as low as what we will see this weekend, many batteries, especially the older ones, will not survive.
KREM 2 reached out to a Spokane auto shop to talk about what they see during this time of the year. Ken Coon from Lloyds Automotive said, “So yeah it’s very common to have dead batteries at this time of the year. Especially when temperatures drop below freezing. We definitely see probably at least one a day.”
Cars that aren’t running frequently have a higher chance of losing their charge so you are urged to drive your car regularly. It is also important to warm up your vehicle for a few minutes before heading out of the driveway.
A Spokane company who distributes batteries to auto shops in the area says they can sell up to 2,000 batteries a month because of the cold conditions.
It is also important to remember to drive safe, watch out for icy roads and take your time during your commute.
