Cold, wet weekend weather stalls Monroe Street Bridge closure

Construction will continue over the weekend at the site of a combined sewer overflow tank being built on Spokane Falls Boulevard.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A closure of the Monroe Street Bridge, Spokane Falls Boulevard and adjacent areas planned for this weekend has been canceled as cold, wet weather is in the forecast.

The closures are needed to accommodate paving in the areas and will need to be rescheduled, city spokesperson Marlene Feist said.

Construction work will continue over the weekend at the site of a combined sewer overflow tank being built on Spokane Falls Boulevard between Lincoln and Monroe Streets. Feist said drivers should anticipate lane restrictions south of the bridge.

Feist said construction in the area is expected to come to an end in late October.

When closures are eventually in effect, the Monroe Street bridge will be completely closed to traffic. The same goes for Spokane Falls Boulevard from Howard to Monroe. If you're traveling to Peaceful Valley, you'll have to take Lincoln Street heading North.

The River Park Square parking garage will be accessible at Lincoln and Main, but drivers will have to exits onto Spokane Falls Boulevard and turn onto Wall Street.

"There still will be work happening on Lincoln street, which is that street between Nordstrom and the library," Feist said. "We're making that pipe connection to that tank which is a really deep connection. That will probably continue to the end of the year."

Drivers may also want to use the Washington or Maple Street Bridges while the Monroe Street Bridge is closed.

When construction is completed next month, the public will be able to take in views of the Spokane River from the new plaza.

"There will be multiple layers, it will have trail connections across the front its going to have an incredible display of art with a theme representing the Spokane tribe of Indians and a water feature," Feist said. "It's really going to be a great place to gather. And we see it as an extension of Riverfront Park to the west."
