Spokane native Sam Sicilia ready to fight in MMA Bellator tournament

The tournament starts September 7. He will win a million dollars if he wins four straight fights.

SPOKANE, Wash. — On September 7, Spokane native and mixed martial arts fighter Sam Sicilia will begin one of the greatest challenges of his career in the octagon.

Sicilia was featured in KREM 2's documentary "Fight Town."

He will compete in a Bellator World Featherweight Grand Prix beginning this Saturday at Bellator 226.

He was one of 16 fighters selected and he will need to win four straight fights to win $1 million. The winner will also claim the featherweight title.

“It’s not about Twitter or who can talk the most crap…it’s really just here’s a bracket. If you win, you keep going. It really is just like the purest form of moving on," Sicilia said.

Sicilia will fight Pedro Carvalho in the opening round of the tournament in San Jose, California. It will be a three-round fight

Matchups after the opening round will be determined by random draw.

Sicilia won his last fight by decision over Derek Campos back in December 2018. That helped him earn a new contract with Bellator.

If Sicilia wins, his next fight in the tournament will likely be before the end of the year.

“I don’t really worry about age until I start feeling it. I feel really good and I don’t feel like I’m starting to slow down," he said.
