SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga women’s basketball star Yvonne Ejim added to her trophy case on Wednesday when it was announced she won the 2024 Becky Hammon Player of the Year award. The award recognizes the best mid-major player in the country.
In eight games against Power 6 opponents, Ejim posted at least 23 points and seven rebounds on at least 68% shooting from the floor four times. Only one woman did it more times.
The senior announced her intent to use her COVID year eligibility to return to Gonzaga for a fifth year before Gonzaga's home game against San Francisco. The announcement was made on a video played on the jumbotron in the Kennel before tip-off.
Ejim enjoyed her best season in a Bulldogs uniform in the 2023-24, averaging a career high 20.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, all while shooting an impressive 63% from the field.
To be eligible for the award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC.
