SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's basketball team is wrapping up its impressive season by honoring the head coach for her outstanding accomplishment.
Lisa Fortier was named the 2024 Kathy Delaney-Smith Coach of the Year, according to a release from the university. The award "recognizes the most outstanding mid-major head coach in the country." Fortier is the first recipient of this award.
Fortier led Gonzaga to a 32-4 record this season, including an undefeated conference schedule. The team made its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history under Fortier, even after a difficult non-conference slate.
Since joining the Zags in 2014, Fortier has led the women's basketball team to a 265-63 overall record, the best winning percentage in program history at 81%.
Fortier was named Coach of the Year in the West Coast Conference in early March.
Fortier took to X to thank the basketball community for the honor.
"What an honor. Thankful for all our players and staff. We grow together!" she wrote.
To be eligible for the Kathy Delaney-Smith Coach of the Year Award, coaches must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major."
