Spokane Transit Authority is in the early stages of a project that will turn one lane in each direction of Division Street into a transit only lane.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown will be speaking to the media Wednesday morning about the implementation of Safe Streets infrastructure within the city.

Mayor Brown is expected to make an announcement on Safe Streets infrastructure starting at 11 a.m. at Main Market Co-op.

In last week's City Council meeting, City Council unanimously approved a resolution proposed by councilmember Zack Zappone, requesting Brown to "direct the Public Works Department to implement adaptive design strategies for transportation infrastructure within the City of Spokane to be paid through the Traffic Calming Measures Fund."

According to Zappone, adaptive design strategies include "temporary right-of-way improvements that provide quick, low-cost solutions for reallocating street space." Zappone said they are typically used to slow vehicles, separate and protect vulnerable pedestrians and bicyclists.

The resolution would also establish a bike lane enhancement pilot project that would identify and prioritize bike lane maintenance hierarchy.

The resolution was referred to as the "Janet Mann Safe Streets Now" resolution. Mann was killed in a hit-and-run crash while crossing the intersection at Browne Street and Main Avenue.

In December, the City of Spokane received a $9.6 million grant from the federal government to make bicycle and pedestrian improvements.

To learn more about the resolution, you can go to the City Council agenda from last week's meeting (page 680 on the current agenda).
