SPOKANE, Wash. — An award of $9.6 million was given to the City of Spokane from the federal government to make bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
The grant requires that the city matches part of the donation, which means $12 million will be invested into the surrounding area to improve bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
“Spokane continues to diversify its transportation needs and we want people to be safe when they are walking and biking in our City,” Public Works Director Marlene Feist said. “We look forward to getting projects under way to benefit the community.”
Neighborhoods impacted by the grant include downtown, Logan, East Central, West Central and more neighborhoods within the city limits. Proposed plans include additional bike lanes, intersection improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians and improvement of pathways along the Spokane River.
“Spokane continues to diversify its transportation needs and we want people to be safe when they are walking and biking in our City,” Feist said. “We look forward to getting projects underway to benefit the community.”
Timelines for the project are not yet available, but the project is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed by 2027.
