Spokane City officials activate warming centers as freezing temperatures hit region

Starting this Wednesday, and likely for the next few days, people in need of shelter from the cold can access the regional shelter system and city library locations.

SPOKANE, Wash. — As temperatures begin to dip in Spokane and the rest of the Inland Northwest, city officials have announced that they are activating warming shelters and resources.

The city says starting this Wednesday, and likely for the next few days, people in need of shelter from the cold can access the regional shelter system and city library locations. Shelter providers are also being encouraged to continue providing space to those who need it up to their capacity.

“Spokane works together in times of need and our regional partners are coming together to do what they can to bring people indoors and connect them to services,” Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward said.

Officials say overflow capacity will be available at the Trent Resource and Assistance Center on an as-needed basis. In addition, Spokane Police and fire crews, along with park rangers, will check on at-risk groups during the extreme cold and direct them to warming resources.
