Spokane City Council approves new two-year contract with Lime

Lime scooters will be back on the streets of Spokane in about a week.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Lime scooters will be returning to the City of Spokane very soon.

Spokane City Council approved a two-year contract with Lime at Monday night's city council meeting. You can expect to see lime e-scooters and e-bikes on Spokane streets in about a week, according to Spokane City Council.

The City's contract with Lime expired last year. Here is what is in the new contract approved by Spokane City Council.

  • Increased emphasis on proper parking
  • Phasing in camera-based sidewalk-riding detection technology to help reduce conflicts with pedestrians
  • Improved river retrieval process that requires recovery within 24 hours and also includes a backup contractor to be paid by Lime
  • Equity requirements for underserved areas, including distributing at least 10 percent of the fleet there
  • Testing out a limited number of seated scooters that have proven popular in other cities

The new contract also gives the City of Spokane options to fine Lime for violations of operating requirements.

The City of Spokane says any Lime scooter or e-bike that is not parked correctly must be re-parked or removed by Lime within two hours of getting a notification between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and within 10 hours at other times. City Council also said Lime must implement a fine system for wrongly parked vehicles as determined by user-taken, end-of-trip photos.

The City of Spokane also said Lime will pay the City $17,000 a year with an extra vehicle charge of 75 cents per vehicle per day, which are the same rates as last year.

You have to be 18 years old or older to ride a Lime scooter or e-bike.
