Spokane Children's Theatre hosts first-ever costume sale

The sale makes room for a new collection and gives others a chance to find fun new pieces for a one-of-a-kind Halloween costume.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Children's Theatre (SCT) hosted its first-ever costume sale on Sunday afternoon.

The sale's purpose was to free up space in the theatre and support its budget for new costumes, all while providing the community with an opportunity to find pieces for a unique Halloween costume.

The theatre had around 600 different pieces for sale.

"It will make space for new things as far as up in the costume collection, but to be really honest, it has allowed us to make space to actually see what we have," said SCT Box Office Manager Lorna Brewer.

Brewer says she worked behind the scenes to get the theatre's costumes into new hands, which will also raise money for the theatre's new scene shop.

"So, that will be the next new project, getting the new tools and setting everything up," said Brewer.

And with Halloween right around the corner, families flocked to the theatre to see what pieces they could find to make the perfect trick-or-treating outfit.

"Tons of costumes, there's shoes, there's jewelry, tons of accessories, really anything you can imagine!" said Matilda Parker, a community member who showed up to shop.

And for some, the costume sale helped other local theatres.

Jessica Kahue, who is putting on her very own production of Robin Hood for the Spokane Valley Christian Home School Co-Op, was able to use the sale to find pieces for her production.

"It's really great that SCT is allowing everyone to come in and get what they need, it's actually cheaper than the thrift store," said Kahue.

The community event even saw some shoppers come from out of state.

Cari King came to Spokane from Oregon to show her support.

"I drove up from Eugene, it's about 460 miles," said King. "And I am just having a blast, they're everything that I thought they would be as far as wonderful people."

The sale will also support the theatre as it prepares for its debut of "Newsies."

SCT will open its season on October 11 and run throughout the month on weekends.
