SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Children's Theatre (SCT) will present Disney's "Newsies" as its season opener, beginning October 11.

The local theatre production will feature actors ranging from ages 9 to 55 years old, with 14 new members making their SCT stage debut.

"Newsies" is a Tony-award-winning musical set in New York in 1889. It tells the story of Jack Kelly, a newspaper boy, who rallies his fellow newsies to strike against unfair treatment from the newspaper publisher.

The production is rated PG for some inappropriate language, fight scenes and references to alcohol and smoking.

SCT will hold shows on weekends from October 11 to October 28.

Show times are Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

There will also be a family value night on Saturday, October 19 at 7 p.m. and an ASL interpreted show on Sunday, October 13.

The director at SCT, Natalie Lemley says the community at SCT makes the local theatre special.

“I love directing at SCT because of the people there. The support and kindness that is shown, we all have a common goal of making theatre an enjoyment for the cast and community," said Lemley. "I love seeing people use their talents and develop. How people work together to create something beautiful to share with the community. Nothing brings me more joy than to see someone push themself and develop confidence in themselves.”

Tickets to the shows are $18 for adults, $17 for military, seniors and students and $12 for children.

On the family value night all tickets will be $12.
