SPOKANE, Wash. — Crews are currently demolishing the old Shopko building on Spokane's South Hill, which has sat empty since closing in 2019.
Home Depot announced a few months ago that it plans to open a new store at the site. The demolition of the old Shopko building marks the first step in this transformation.
One local resident expressed her relief and excitement about the demolition. "We’ve been hoping for this to get torn down and turned into something just to keep less than savory characters out of our property or our area, and now it’s finally being done," she said.
The Shopko building has been a part of the community for decades, but residents in the area told KREM 2 they are looking forward to the change in scenery and the potential increase in safety that the new Home Depot store could bring.
According to documents filed with the city, construction on the Home Depot is slated to begin in the spring/summer of 2024 and is expected to open in the summer of 2025. Home Depot says approximately 200 people will be employed at the store.
