SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — The suspect who was shot by Spokane Valley deputies during a domestic violence call has been identified as 49-year-old Lanz Zeppa.
According to the Washington State Patrol, who is helping head the investigation into the shooting, Zeppa remains hospitalized and will be booked into the Spokane County Jail upon release.
Deputies shot Zeppa at an apartment complex near the 12000 block of East Cataldo just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday evening.
A woman told the 911 caller that Zeppa was allegedly intoxicated and attacking her and her young child. Deputies said they also learned the suspect had access to firearms, but they did not know if he was armed or if medics were needed.
When deputies arrived at the apartment complex, they called for additional backup. Deputies allegedly gave commands to Zeppa before reporting that shots had been fired and the suspect was shot and on the ground.
Zeppa was detained and life-saving efforts were provided until Spokane Valley Fire and AMR personnel took over. Zeppa was taken to a hospital where he was in critical, but stable, condition at last check.
No one apart from Zeppa was injured during the shooting.
The four deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave in line with standard protocol.
The Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team (SIIR Team) is conducting the investigation.
