KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — A man who was wanted by police for failing to register as a sex offender was caught and taken into custody after he allegedly hit a Kootenai County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) detective with his car.
According to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office at approximately 12:45 p.m., detectives from KCSO's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) were in the area of Spokane Street and Seltice Way in Post Falls when they found Emanuel V. Zavala. Zavala had multiple warrants due to him failing to register himself as a sex offender.
Detectives tried to stop Zavala at a gas station parking lot, but as one of the detectives was getting out of their car, Zavala proceeded to drive towards the detective and hit him along with his car, the sheriff's office said.
The detective was able to jump out of the way and avoided being seriously injured. The SIU detectives followed Zavala to a nearby house on 3rd Avenue near Spokane Street, but Zavala ran inside the home which started a standoff, said KCSO.
KCSO said when Zavala refused to leave the house, KCSO and the Coeur d'Alene Police Department Joint Agency SWAT Team responded to the scene. Zavala ended up leaving the house and surrendered.
Zavala was later booked into jail on several felony charges such as Aggravated Battery on a Peace Officer, Felony Eluding Causing Injury, multiple Sex Offender Registry violation warrants, as well as multiple probation violations.
The detective who was hit went to Kootenai Health to get his leg checked out and was cleared with minor injuries.
