MOSCOW, Idaho — University of Idaho President Scott Green is now the author of a new book available nationwide.
"The University President's Leadership Handbook" is a guide for times of crisis and looks back at how the school managed the COVID-19 pandemic and the tragic murders of four University of Idaho students at an off-campus home.
"Telling our story has always been part of our, one of our three strategic pillars, along with students success and research that matters to our state," Green told KREM 2.
Green is not your typical university president. As a former corporate CEO, he's written several books about business theory, but this newest book is different.
"We've been through three major crises in four years," Green said.
It's why he and co-author Temple Kinyon came together to share their message.
"It speaks to a pretty broad audience because there's a lot of other information in there, whether you're a CEO or a leader, or manager," Kinyon said. "It really truly is a handbook."
From seemingly insurmountable budget constraints to the COVID-19 pandemic, the two former University of Idaho students dive into what's worked and what hasn't every step of the way.
"We were very honest in here. Not everything was successful," Green said. "We talk about that because we want it to be a real-life handbook for those who pick it up and may rely on it one day."
While COVID-19 proved to be a unique crisis, Green said some of the lessons learned from the pandemic apply to other situations.
"What we accomplished in that regard was powerful, because not only did we reopen, we opened up our own lab, we opened up our own infirmary," Green said. "And our local hospital never went into a crisis standard of care, like many did across the state. So, that's our community coming together, and we're just very proud of that."
But, they both agree nothing could have prepared them for what would come in November of 2022: the brutal murders of four University of Idaho students just off campus.
"It was probably one of the saddest moments for this campus in our history, and to deal with, with that was breaking new ground, I think, for all of us," Green said.
But, Green said it was critical to include those unprecedented challenges in the new book.
"Never be afraid to tell your story," Green continued. "Because you never know when your experiences can help other people through their experiences that they're facing."
The university's portion of proceeds from book sales help fund the "Vandal Healing Garden." It's meant to be a quiet place on campus to reflect on students whose lives have been cut short. Books are available online and in bookstores nationwide. They can also be found at the U of I campus bookstore.
