SPOKANE, Wash. — Families struggling with hunger often face additional challenges during the summer when children are out of school and have limited access to meals. In response, Second Harvest has launched a new program aimed at putting food into the hands of kids in need. Today, we visited the program to see how it's working.
At two locations each Friday, Second Harvest and the Bite to Go program distribute bags of food to kids or their parents. The organization aims to reach about 1,500 children each week through this initiative. During the school year, children have access to free breakfast and lunch, but this availability decreases during the summer months.
The two distribution sites are Shaw Middle School and First Free Methodist Church. Children or their parents or guardians can pick up food at these locations on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as long as supplies last. The Bite to Go program will continue at these sites through August.
