Court documents detail what led to deadly shooting, chase on Hamilton Street

The three 18-year-old suspects appeared in court Tuesday afternoon. They are all charged with robbery, criminal conspiracy and assault.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The three men arrested in the shooting on Hamilton Street last week appeared in court Tuesday.

Newly filed court documents detail what lead up to the shooting that killed a woman who was in the same car as the suspects.

Early last week, a Spokane man reported he was a victim of theft. He told police his ring camera captured the thefts, which he says happened three times that week.

Court documents said the victim found his stolen tools posted for sale on Facebook Marketplace. He connected with the seller and they met at Andrew Rypien Park.

The victim reported to Crime Check they were meeting. When the seller arrived, court docs say the five suspects rolled down a window and put on ski masks. Court docs say after one of the suspects had a confrontation with the victim, he drove off quickly.

The victim followed the suspects while on the phone with Crime Check. Court documents say two suspects leaned out of the car and fired about five times. Police eventually stopped the suspect vehicle. They found a woman, identified as Sally, dead in the front seat with a gunshot wound to the head.

Court documents say the victim and his passenger, who were following the suspects, did not fire their weapons.

According to investigators, all three 18-year-old suspects told police that Sally shot herself, adding she said she would rather die than go back to jail.

Court documents say Devin McEwen admitted the group breaks into vehicles and sells the stolen items. He also told police they planned on robbing the man they were meeting at the park.

The three suspects are all charged with robbery, criminal conspiracy and assault. The driver is charged for attempting to elude police.
