12-year-old who brought loaded gun to Shaw Middle School appears in court

A 12-year-old has been arrested after bringing a loaded gun to school and threatening classmates if they told anyone.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A 12-year-old Shaw Middle School student has been arrested after bringing a loaded gun to school on October 15.

Judge Jeremy Schmidt ruled on Wednesday at the student's detention hearing that he will remain detained until further court order. At this time, the student will go through in-patient psychiatric treatment to determine whether or not he is a threat to public safety.

If he is deemed safe, the student will be able to go home while being monitored electronically. If it is found that he is not safe, he will go back to the juvenile detention center.

If the student is able to go home, Judge Schmidt ruled that no weapons are allowed to be in the home and that the student is not allowed to leave his home unless he is with his parents.

According to the affidavit of facts, multiple students became aware of the gun in the student's backpack after he was showing it off.

Witnesses say that this student even went as far as threatening witnesses saying "If you snitch, I will pop you in your head next time I see you".

After someone reported the gun to a teacher, police responded and the student ran from campus but he was arrested a short distance away.

Documents say that police found a 45-caliber handgun inside of the student's bag and he was taken to the Spokane County Juvenile Facility and faces second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm charges.

The student's arraignment has been set for October 23.
