SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Police Department (SPD) arrested a 12-year-old student suspected of bringing a gun to Shaw Middle School on Tuesday.
According to SPD, officers responded to the middle school after school officials advised 911 that a student had a weapon on campus. SPD said this information was brought forward by another student to school staff.
SPD said District 81 Resource Officers contacted the student and took his backpack away before the student fled campus. The resource officers found a loaded handgun inside the backpack.
SPD said officers found the student close to campus and detained him. SPD said other information was obtained that the student showed the gun to another classmate and told him not to say anything.
SPD said the 12-year-old student was arrested for possession of dangerous weapons on school facilities and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and was booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center.
Shaw Middle School was on lockdown for around 10 minutes Tuesday morning.
