SPOKANE, Wash. — For the first time since learning that Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer will no longer lead the department, the chief is speaking out.
KREM 2 sat down with Schaeffer on Friday to ask him about his decision to step away and about the timing of it all. Schaeffer said the timing all came down to his pension and when he was able to retire.
Schaeffer said he wanted to be a firefighter from day one after a fire destroyed his family's home back in 1971.
Schaeffer's last day will be on March 31, 2024. Until then, he said he'll help with the transition process of bringing in a new chief. When asked if it will be an internal or external hire, Schaeffer said he did not know.
