Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer announces retirement

The City of Spokane shared that Mayor Lisa Brown and Schaeffer mutually agreed on his retirement after the mayor announced she had plans to transition the role.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer has announced that he and Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown have mutually agreed on his retirement from the Spokane Fire Department (SFD).

According to the city of Spokane, Schaeffer's retirement comes just after Brown had made plans to transition the role. Schaeffer will be stepping down as chief on Jan. 15, 2024, but will help plan the transition and remain with SFD until the end of March.

“It has been an honor to lead and serve alongside the exceptional individuals at the Spokane Fire Department over the past 20 years. The experiences gained and the relationships forged will forever be cherished. I look forward to seeing the SFD continue to thrive and set benchmarks in public safety and community service,” Chief Schaeffer said.

Schaeffer led the department since 2017 and has worked with SFD for around two decades. Assistant Fire Chief Tom Williams will remain in his role and will continue to manage day-to-day operations, according to the city. The city said more details on the transition process will be released soon.

“Chief Schaeffer is a dedicated public servant who has helped our community both in times of crisis and in times of celebration. I thank him for his commitment to our community and wish him the best as he heads into retirement,” Mayor Brown said.
