SPOKANE, Wash. — More than 30 years after arriving in Spokane as an immigrant from Mexico, Lili Navarette's name is now etched in history as the first Hispanic woman to hold a position on city council.
In a 4-2 vote last week, council named her the newest member, filling the district two vacancy left by Betsy Wilkerson, who now serves as council president.
In a divisive political environment, Navarette says she wants to be a unifier.
KREM 2's Mark Hanrahan had the chance to sit down with Navarette to talk about her role, why she wanted it and what she hopes to accomplish.
