David's Pizza prepares for increased crowds amid downtown Spokane events

With several events around Spokane's downtown area, businesses are preparing for increased foot-traffic.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Several events in downtown Spokane are bringing people in to enjoy the city and its local businesses.

A local restaurant, David's Pizza, is preparing its workers for a busy weekend rush.

"We talk not only to our staff, but we're also talking to the community," said Rickie Barton, who has been working at David's Pizza on and off for 10 years. "Moving away, coming back, I always end up here."

The largest event, the Great Outdoors Comedy Festival at ONE Spokane Stadium, is bringing in around 7,500 people. Organizers say about 35% of those tickets were purchased from people outside of Spokane, which is roughly 2,000 people visiting the city.

Other key events in downtown Spokane include the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck, which drew a long line in front of River Park Square on Saturday, and the 4th annual Tacos y Tequila Festival at Spokane Falls Boulevard and Lincoln Street on Saturday and Sunday.

Barton says communication and flexibility are key to keeping things running smoothly.

"Making sure we have staff that's adaptable, staff that have been here for a while," said Barton. "We've seen a drop in numbers that we were expecting, but we're hoping to pick it back up today because the weather is so nice today."

Barton says she estimates double the usual Saturday profits due to extra traction and hopes that people from out of town join their regulars in enjoying their pizza.

"It's a learning experience, so we're going to see how it turns out," said Barton.
