SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane police arrested a man wanted for murder following an hours-long SWAT standoff in the Logan neighborhood.
According to Terry Preuninger with the Spokane Police Department (SPD), 32-year-old Gunnar Doughty is in custody charged with second-degree murder. SPD told KREM 2 he barricaded himself in a basement crawl space and only came out after police launched pepper spray into the home.
Police say Doughty is accused of shooting and killing a man in the front yard of a home on North Hamilton Street last Friday. Earlier Thursday evening, police learned he was inside a home near the intersection of Morton and Carlisle. SPD said they were able to safely get several adults and two children, ages 14 and eight, safely out of the house.
SPD said Doughty refused to come out of the house, so the SWAT team launched drones, robots and pepper spray into the home. Doughty surrendered and was taken into custody just before 9 p.m. Thursday.
“In this case, he’s wanted, I believe, for second-degree murder, and so it’s obviously serious," Preuninger said. "There’s a huge potential for violence, which is why you see us use so many resources here.”
Police are executing a search warrant and looking for evidence inside the home. Doughty will be booked into the Spokane County Jail.
