SPOKANE, Wash. — The Inland Northwest is facing a significant weather event today, with a combination of high winds, heavy rain, and mountain snow prompting a Weather Impact Alert Day.
Wind Alerts and Expected Impact
The primary concern today is the wind. Wind advisories are in place across the Palouse and southern Washington, while more severe high wind warnings are active for Central Washington, including areas from Moses Lake to Wenatchee and Chelan. The Waterville Plateau is expected to experience the strongest gusts, potentially reaching up to 60 mph.
These winds, which are forecasted to peak later this afternoon and evening, could cause tree damage and power outages. Although Spokane and Coeur d'Alene are not currently under a wind advisory, winds are forecasted to reach near-advisory levels, around 40 mph. The National Weather Service may issue updates later today.
Rainfall and Mountain Snow
Rain is widespread across the region, with the heaviest downpours expected around midday. The cold front, currently moving through Douglas and Grant Counties, is driving this rainfall, which will taper off later in the afternoon. Mountainous areas above 3,500 feet will see snow, adding to the accumulation from the weekend. Areas like Lookout Pass are under a winter storm warning, with several inches of snow expected.
Driving Conditions
Travelers should be cautious, especially on north-south highways like Highway 195, where crosswinds could make driving challenging. High-profile vehicles are particularly susceptible to wind gusts, and drivers should be vigilant for sudden lane drifts.
Looking Ahead
After today's active weather, conditions will improve significantly. Winds will decrease by Tuesday morning, leading to a calmer week ahead. Stay updated with KREM 2 on-air and online for the latest weather information.
