Unseasonably cold temperatures and rain to start July

It may not seem like summer weather, but warmth and sun is coming soon to the Inland Northwest forecast.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The month of July is starting with temperatures that are well below normal. So much so that it feels way more like the start of May instead of the start of July.

High temperatures in Spokane may only end up in the mid-60s today. And in Sandpoint, 50 degrees has been the warmest so far today as of 3 P.M. This is about 15 degrees below normal.

The record coldest high temperature for July 1 in Spokane is 54 degrees, a record that was set in 1912. And for Sandpoint, it's 53 degrees and that record could still be broken.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, only 12% of years see the high temperature colder than 70 degrees.

A deep low-pressure area is the cause of the cold weather across Washington today. That coupled with the overcast skies has kept things in the 60s for the most part. And the locations where it rained, particularly in the northern parts on the Inland Northwest, those temperatures have been in the 50s.

Thankfully, it's not a stagnate feature. Temperatures recover into the 70s Thursday with more sunshine and then we're back to average and around 80 degrees by the 4th of July weekend.
