SPOKANE, Wash. — Spring? Not here in the Inland Northwest, at least not yet.
Snow fell across parts of eastern Washington and north Idaho late Thursday night and into Friday morning, covering recently budding trees and plants in a layer of white.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) warned drivers about snow and slush that accumulated on some area highways, telling people to drive for conditions.
“Snowing in Spokane… and it’s April 14. Insane…,” WSDOT tweeted.
As of 6 a.m. on Friday, the National Weather Service tweeted about a pair of circulations that were spinning over the Spokane region, including areas near Coeur d’Alene, Davenport, and as far west as Ritzville.
“Snow showers are developing around each low and in between the counterclockwise wind fields where the winds are converging,” the NWS tweeted.
Snow totals are varied across the region depending on where the heavy snow showers hit. A report from the Hangman Valley noted over 4 inches of snow, while parts of Spokane’s South Hill saw about an inch of snow.
Roads are mostly clear but with temperatures below freezing overnight drivers should be prepared for some slick spots, especially on neighborhood streets.
Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, and the Palouse all remain under a Winter Weather Advisory until 8 am.
While the snow is lighter this morning, KREM 2 Meteorologist Thomas Patrick said scattered snowfall may continue all the way until sunset tonight at the latest.
Weekend forecast
Another storm system will push from south to northeast across the Inland Northwest Saturday afternoon and evening. Rain and/or snow are likely between the Palouse and all of North Idaho. Lower elevations may see between a dusting and two inches of new snowfall with this storm. Spokane is right on the edge of the track, but rain/snow is possible.
Easter Sunday will be largely dry, but the mountains may see a stray shower. Otherwise, highs will climb into the 50s for the first time in a while.
Temps will stay in the 50s all next week but a very unsettled weather pattern will result in daily rain chances and possibly a chance for thunderstorms on Tuesday.
