Winter Weather Advisory to start the week in Spokane with major snowstorm on the way

Light snow fell on Spokane early Monday morning, as we track a major storm that could drop 8 inches of snow or more in the Inland Northwest on Wednesday.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Snow started falling early Monday morning in Spokane, a sign of what’s to come later this week.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Spokane until 10:00 p.m. on Monday. The NWS said additional snow accumulations of one to three inches is possible. Total snowfall could be 2 to 4 inches.

Snow showers could continue off and on throughout the day.

Snow showers are also moving through the Palouse on Monday morning where there is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect.

Whatever snow falls on Monday will stick around. Temperatures stay below freezing all day as very cold arctic weather plunges into the region. The coldest temperatures will be in Montana.

With the freezing temperatures, drivers should be prepared for slick roads, especially on less traveled surfaces, like in neighborhoods. WSDOT has also responded to several crashes on I-90.

Major snowstorm on Wednesday

A major snowstorm is expected across eastern Washington and north Idaho on Wednesday as a huge weather system hits the Pacific Northwest.

Spokane is forecasted to get between 4 to 8 inches of snow, although some models are pushing the total even higher. The current forecast models give Spokane a 50% chance of getting 6 or more inches of snow.

Here are the forecasted snow totals for Wednesday:

  • Spokane: 5”-10”
  • Coeur d’Alene: 5”-10”
  • Sandpoint: 8”-15”
  • Moses Lake: 1”-3”
  • Pullman: 2”-5”

The NWS said snow should start on Tuesday evening and continue all day Wednesday into Thursday morning.
