SPOKANE, Wash. — Drivers should be prepared for a slower commute throughout Monday as snow covers roads across the Inland Northwest.
While snow has ended in many areas, including Spokane, untreated roads are not expected to get any better.
Spokane county warns that traffic will turn the wet, heavy snow into a compact sheet of ice.
“I call this Seattle snow. It’s wet, heavy, and traffic turns it into a sheet of ice. With even colder temperatures expected over the next few days, motorists need to slow down and be patient,” Andy Schenk, Administrator of the Roads Operations and Maintenance Division said.
Washington State Department of Transportation has crews working to clear the freeways and highways. Most major roads, like I-90, are clear but wet. However, drivers should expect slush in places.
"If you have travel plans this morning, plan for extra travel time on your morning commute. Snow continues to impact the region and while traffic is moving, it is slow. Use caution, drive for conditions and give our crews plenty of extra space to clear the roadways," WSDOT posted on Twitter.
Troopers were busy responding to numerous crashes and spinouts. WSDOT warned about delays on SR 20 near Cusick after a collision involving a log truck.
The City of Spokane reports it has crews out working on arterials and hills.
Spokane County has been working since early this morning to plow and sand. The focus is on emergency routes and major arterials.
