SPOKANE, Wash. — The worst of the fire weather is behind us. Following a shift in wind direction, calmer, northerly winds will prevail in the days to come. The lighter, northerly wind will continue to bring smoke to the Inland Northwest through the weekend before rain returns to the forecast.
A slow steady improvement in fire weather conditions will persist throughout the weekend. Calm winds and increased atmospheric moisture will be present each day. The incoming rain arrives late Sunday and Monday and comes from the future remnants of Hurricane Hilary.
As the now major hurricane makes landfall and tracks north, Pacific moisture will advect across the plains, deserts, and mountains to our south eventually making it to the Inland Northwest. Right now, the odds of a widespread soaking rain aren’t great. But increased atmospheric moisture and light showers are likely Monday and Tuesday of next week.
The chance of showers looks to stick around through the work week despite decreasing with each passing day, but any bit of potential rain right now is worth tracking. At this point in time there is little model agreement on the amount of incoming moisture, but what is likely are scattered heavier showers and a few local strikes of lightning as the remnant low of Hilary nears.
The KREM 2 Weather Team will have the latest information as the pattern change nears.
