SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Parks and Recreation created a restoration plan for the damage caused by the windstorm earlier this year on January 13.
The windstorm had 71-mph wind gusts, left two people dead and caused widespread damage.
The windstorm damaged about 200 trees and other park amenities. Tennis courts, a playground, a golf building, lights, fences, benches and tables all require some level of restoration.
The estimated cost of the storm damage is about $700,000.
In a press release from Spokane Parks and Recreation, they said they are working with SpoCanopy and the Lands Council to work to restore the damage by replacing trees, replacing certain grasses and continue to remove safety hazards.
The Lands Council has a partnership with SpoCanopy that works to ensure every person has access to green space and healthy tree canopy. The goal of SpoCanopy is to have 40% tree cover across the city by 2030.
Crews have been working to remove fallen trees and other hazards for months. The proceeds they made from the sale of the fallen logs during the clean up, approximately $21,000, will fund the replacement trees.
The initiative has a goal to plant approximately 400 trees.
The trees that will be planted are Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, Western larch and white pine. A diverse tree population is crucial to protect from insects, disease and extreme weather.
To help with the restoration process, you can volunteer to help plant trees, purchase a Comstock Park poster and all of the proceeds will go towards the restoration process or donate directly.
