Will the Inland Northwest see a White Christmas? | A Holiday Poem by Jeremy LaGoo

Twas the week before Christmas, with no snow on the ground...

SPOKANE, Wash. — Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the land;

No snow on the ground, Spokane to Chelan.

A stark difference from winters we’ve seen in years past;

Warm temps and wet rain melted snow fast.

Storm after storm missing, going North, diving south;

Is there snow before Christmas or are we all missing out?

Historically speaking it’s not guaranteed,

An inch on the ground is what we all need.

Six years in 10 a white Christmas we boast;

Believe it or not that’s still more than most.

Plenty cities have none year in and year out,

This year we will join them, there’s no need to pout.

No snow on the ground and none in the sky.

Snowless on Christmas the odds are nigh.

When it comes to white flakes, filling the air;

One in 4 Christmases claims that holiday flair.

If it’s snow you want on this Christmas Eve,

Low elevations you must pack up and leave.

Head to the mountains for winter cold and deep snow,

Holiday wonder in trees and on the ground down below.

Snow in the mountains is our holiday cheer,

It’s as close as we get until this time next year.

This week will end with no snow in sight,

But it’s a Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

The chart above comes form the National Weather Service office in Spokane, WA. The La Nina pattern in recent years helped bring about a white Christmas for much of the region. However, this year's El Nino is doing the exact opposite.

Our mild winter pattern looks to holds in the days and weeks to come. While that might mean we miss out on a white Christmas this year, that isn't completely out of the ordinary. It happens. But what that does mean is that travel should be a bit easier than what we saw last winter.
