Light showers linger after wettest day of the year yesterday

Spokane got 7-tenths of an inch of rain Wednesday, making it the wettest single day of the whole year.
Rain will last all day long, while heavy snow in the mountains prompts winter storm warnings for Sherman Pass and Washington Pass on Wednesday.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Soaking wet. That's what yesterday's storm left the Inland Northwest as. at 0.70" of rain in Spokane, that was the single wettest day of 2024 so far. The last of the widespread rain exited North Idaho by 6 am Thursday. Any lingering moisture in the air could still result in some stray rain showers on Thursday. It should mostly be over the mountains, but not entirely. In fact, as of writing this at 8 am, some light rain just re-popped back up over Lincoln, Spokane, and Kootenai Counties.

Aside from the stray, random, showers Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, we'll end up mostly dry. High temperatures will go from the upper 40s, to the mid 40s Friday, to the low 40s Saturday.

The next storm will press into the region late Saturday night into Sunday morning. I can guarantee it'll rain again. What I can't guarantee is the chance of snow. There are a lot of details that don't match up... allow me to explain:

Computer modeling does plot snow over Spokane and for northern Washington and North Idaho valleys Sunday morning with the initial push of precipitation. The forecast temperature is around 33-35 degrees which is cold enough to snow, although it probably wouldn't stick. However, most models still only have snow levels down to about 3,000'... which would not support snowfall at the valley level. Also, the jet stream nudges into a ridge shape which also promotes warmer temperatures which would fall under the rain category for us. Bottom line: I'll leave a chance for snow in the forecast Sunday morning, but no guarantee. And if it does snow, no chance it sticks since temperatures will be in the 40s with rain during the day.
